GUNA YALA

Who We Are
A town proud of its roots and its sea.
The Guna are one of the most organized indigenous peoples in Latin America. We live in the Guna Yala region, home to more than 365 islands off the Caribbean coast of Panama, a territory we care for and govern autonomously.
Our Territory
More than 365 islands, only 49 inhabited.
Guna Yala is a marine paradise where we coexist respectfully with the sea, the cays, and the jungle. The Guna complement their fishing with coconut, cassava, yam, pineapple, and banana crops on the nearby mainland, ensuring that most of the islands remain untouched by coconut trees, turtles, and iguanas.

Guna gastronomy
Flavor that comes from the sea and the jungle.
Guna cuisine is simple and fresh, based on fish, seafood, plantain, coconut, and tropical fruits. Dishes like Tule Masi (plantain soup with fish) and grilled or fried fish over a wood fire reflect the connection with the sea and land, and sharing them is part of the island's tradition.

Outfit
Dressing is telling stories.
Guna women create the famous molas, hand-embroidered fabrics that represent our worldview, animals, plants, and spiritual symbols. We also wear necklaces, beads, and nose rings, elements that reflect who we are and where we come from.
